Tom Long was born in Boston to Australian parents during their visit to Massachusetts. He grew up back in his hometown. Tom was raised in a farm located at Benalla, Victoria, and attended Geelong Grammar School. While he was still a student at the school, he performed the role of jackaroo and shearer. He then traveled abroad to several countries including the UK and India, and a few states in the United States including South Carolina and Los Angeles. Tom later returned to Australia to get enrolled at the National School of Dramatic Art. He passed the audition and graduated in 1994.
