While he was studying in London, he got to know Brian May and Roger Taylor through a mutual friend who had already formed Queen with singer, Freddie Mercury. He was offered to audition to play bass in the band as their bassist had left the band and in 1971, John Deacon became the official bassist for Queen.
He and his bandmates went on to become one of the most successful bands in the world and toured all over. Some of the hits songs composed by him while he was on the band are Another One Bites the Dust, Friends Will Be Friends, and I Want To Break Free. Besides playing bass in the band, he also played guitars, piano, and keyboards on some of the songs and was directly involved in the band’s financial management.
After the sad death of Queen’s lead singer, Freddie Mercury in 1991, John Deacon lost all interest in performing and making music. He started to make a very few concert appearances and finally announced his retirement from the industry altogether in 1997, with a final song No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young) with the remaining members of Queen. Since then he has only had financial roles in the band and has not made any big appearances. He seems to be enjoying a quiet retired life with his family.
